Add-On Design FAQs

How Do Add-On Designs Work?

If you haven’t taken the chance to explore how ProPhoto is setup and used already, you’ll want to check that out first.  Here’s how things work….

  1. WordPress is the framework you use to build your site – a blog, a website, or a combination of the two.
  2. ProPhoto is the tool that allows you to customize your site to look however you want.
  3. A “design” in ProPhoto is simply set of “saved customization settings” within ProPhoto.

The great thing about ProPhoto is that it lets you change up the look of your site whenever you want to.  Each time you make a series of changes and save them, they are being saved to your current “Design” within ProPhoto.  You can then edit your current “Design” anytime you want, or you can create new Designs and switch back and forth between them at any time.  This video explains all of this.

So what is an “Add-On Design” (or “Paid Starter Design”) then?

First, a designer uses ProPhoto to create a unique Design, and then exports that Design from ProPhoto.  The export creates a single zip file that contains a collection of all of those settings, images, and fonts.

When you upload a design into your ProPhoto installation, all that hard work is imported into your site, just as if you had customized ProPhoto and uploaded all of the backgrounds, graphics, and fonts yourself.  The end result is that you can use the imported Design as-is, or you can modify the imported settings and images as much as you’d like.  After all, the designer’s settings made within ProPhoto are all available for you to tweak.

Can I Customize An Add-On Design?

Absolutely!  As discussed in the previous question, a “Design” in ProPhoto is really just a set of stored customization settings within ProPhoto – think of an Add-On Design as a preset.  No matter which design you have activated in ProPhoto, you still have full access to all of the options within ProPhoto to tweak the add-on design as much, or as little as you’d like.

For example, if you like how a particular design looks, but you want to change the navigation menu links/tabs, you’re in control.  Using the ProPhoto menus area, you’ll be able to customize how your own menu system looks and works.  Although each add-on design has it’s own default menu settings, you can edit them however you’d like!

Or, let’s say you really like a design but want to change the background of a particular area to a different graphic you have that you like better, not a problem.  Again, using the ProPhoto customization options, you’ll be able to replace any Add-On Design default background with your own image.

The same is true for any element of an Add-On Design that was created using ProPhoto’s Buttons functionality.  For example, if a particular design’s logo graphic was created as a ProPhoto Button, simply go to the Buttons customization area in ProPhoto and edit the logo “Button” to look however you’d like (e.g. change the text to your own company name).

Can I Change Colors In An Add-On Design?

The answer in general is yes.  Again, you’ll have full access to all of the ProPhoto customization options so you can simply change any colors that were set directly within the ProPhoto customization area (e.g. font colors, static background colors, colors in Buttons, etc, etc).

For example, look at all the color selections you have just for the Overall Font setttings!

That being said, sometimes Add-On Designs include images that have been uploaded right within the ProPhoto customization area (e.g. comment area background images, certain icons, etc.).  If an Add-On Design uses custom-made images, they will be available to you in Photoshop ‘PSD’ format in the design zip file you receive after purchase.  You can simply open the files in Photoshop, edit them however you’d like, export your modified image, and then upload your replacement in the respective ProPhoto customize area.  All Designs include instructions as well, giving you additional detail on where to locate these images, as well as basic instructions for editing in Photoshop.

Do I Need Photoshop To Work With Designs?

While Photoshop is in not a requirement to use either ProPhoto or any Design, if you plan on making changes to any of the design graphics in a Design (see example given below), then you’ll need some kind of software that can edit PSD files.  This might be Photoshop, or a compatible software.

So as a quick example, let’s say you like the specific “comment area background image” of a particular design, but you wish it was a different color.  All you’d need to do is locate the corresponding PSD file in the Design zip file, open it in Photoshop, change the color and export the new version.  Then, locate where the original image was uploaded inside of the ProPhoto customization area, and upload your edited images as a replacement.

But, if you already have your own image that you’d like to use for the comment area background, and you don’t need the design’s default background image at all, then it’s easy to upload your own image file for the comment area background and replace the default one in ProPhoto.  In this case, you will not need Photoshop or similar software.

To summarize:

Do you want to modify an image/graphic included with an add-on design?  YES – you’ll need a way to edit ‘PSD’ files – either with Photoshop, a 30-day trial of the software, or another software that can edit ‘PSD’ files – like the free GIMP software.

Have no plans to edit any of the design’s images and/or have your own images that you’ll upload instead?  NO – you shouldn’t need Photoshop.
