All About FTP

What is FTP?

A website on the internet consists mostly of files that are stored on a web server somewhere. As the website owner, you need to be able to add, delete, move, rename, and edit those files. Because those files don’t live on your own computer, but on your web host’s server computer, you need a way to access those files. Using an FTP program is the most common and easiest way to access and edit those files. FTP stands for “File Transfer Protocol.”

An FTP program is a simple program that lets you connect to your remote web server computer and make changes to the files there. You can add new files (called “uploading”), delete files, move files, download files, and change special properties (called “permissions”) of those files, all using an FTP program.
