ProPhoto’s built-in contact form provides you with several different field types to add to your form. Adding the right input fields to your form allows you collect the information from your potential clients that is most relevant to you.
Form Field Basics
Before we look at the different types of form fields, there are a few things to know about how your fields are displayed. First, all form fields are stacked vertically in the order that they are entered. Secondly, your form must have at least a “Name” field and an “Email” field selected, and they must both be set as required fields. These fields are required by ProPhoto to process a contact form submission and so that you will know the name and Email address of the person contacting you so that you can reply to them.
Here are the field types that you can choose from within your form: (a maximum of 25 form fields)
Pretty self-explanatory, a field set to off will not show up in your contact form at all. ProPhoto will display only one “off” field in your admin area, but when you change to a different type, another empty ‘off’ field will appear.
An Email field shows up in your form as a single-line input field for entering text. Any description text will be displayed immediately above the input area.
This field can be set as required or optional, but your form MUST contain at least one Email field that is set to ‘required’. This Email will be used at the primary contact Email address and will be used as the “reply to” address in the Email sent to you when the form is submitted. If for some reason you have more than one Email field in your contact form, ProPhoto will use the first one as the primary contact Email address.
A name field shows up in your form as a single-line input field for entering text. Any description text will be displayed immediately above the input area.This field can be set as required or optional, but your form MUST contain at least one name field that is set to required. This name will be used at the primary contact name in the Email sent to you when the form is submitted. If you have more than one name field in your contact form, ProPhoto will use the first one as the primary contact name.
Text (single line)
A text field shows up in your form as a single-line input field for entering short snippets of text. Any description will be displayed immediately above the input area.
Text fields can be required or optional.
Text Area (multi line)
A text area is a larger, multi-line input field for entering longer messages that can contain paragraphs of text. Any description will be displayed immediately above the input area.
A checkbox field displays a small, checkable box followed by some descriptive text. The text for a checkbox should describe some true/false value that the visitor will be selecting.Adding several checkbox fields in a row allows you to create groups of selectable items where more than one option can be selected.Checkboxes will show up in your contact form Emails as a line showing your checkbox text, followed by “checked” or “not checked”. Checkboxes cannot be ‘required’.
A multiple choice field is a group of options where only one option in the group can be selected. They are displayed as a series of clickable buttons, each followed by their entered value. You can add as many choices as you want by adding the text for each multiple select button on its own line in the provided text area (as shown above).
If entered, multiple choice description text will be shown above your group of buttons. The buttons themselves can be aligned either in a horizontal row, or stacked vertically.
NOTE: The option at the top of your list will be ‘selected’ in the contact form by default, so this value will come through in your contact Email if the visitor doesn’t change their selection.
A dropdown select displays a dropdown menu allowing a single option to be selected. You can add as many options as you want by adding the text for each dropdown option on its own line in the provided text area (as shown above). Similar in functionality to multiple choice buttons, dropdown selects are best suited to a long list of options, because only the ‘selected’ option is seen after the visitor chooses an option.Dropdown selects can be optional or required. A required dropdown adds the ability for you to add a alternate ‘first option’ which cannot be left selected by a visitor.
A required dropdown select will be ‘invalid’ if another option is not selected by the visitor. This allows you to force visitors to choose an option for this field.
A date selector is a field for collecting a date (year, month and day) from a visitor. This field will be displayed as a plain text input with the description text displayed above.When a visitor clicks in the field, a calendar is displayed below the field, allowing the visitor to select a specific date.Once selected, the date will be entered into the text field in a numeric MM/DD/YYYY format. Date fields can be required or optional.
NOTE: The calendar will appear slightly different in Google Chrome, which has its own specific calendar appearance.
Different from the other fields, headline fields aren’t inputs, but simple headline texts that can be inserted into your form. They provide a way to divide groups of inputs, or to just add some additional descriptive text.You can also adjust the space above and below your headlines, overriding the “space below each form field” value set in the “ProPhoto” > “Customize” > “Contact Form” > “Appearance” > “Contact form field appearance” area.
