Hiding Elements within ProPhoto

When building your site with ProPhoto, it’s quite common to want to use certain features, but only have them show up in certain places on your site.  So, to make this easier, ProPhoto gives you the option of displaying certain features in only the places you want.  There are two built in ways to do this.

  • Use the ProPhoto interface to choose what areas will display on certain “page types”.  The content of this tutorial describes these global settings.
  • Override the global settings by choosing to hide/show an area on an article specific basis. A separate tutorial covers these options

Before we start, just a quick note that the “show/hide” options you see will depend on whether or not you are using a “static home page” for your site.  (More information on using a “static home page” can be found here.)

For the purposes of this tutorial, we are going to assume you DO have a “static home page”, so if you aren’t using one, just be aware that your options may look just a bit different than our screenshots.

Masthead

You can show/hide your masthead on certain pages by using the options under
“ProPhoto” > “Customize” > “Header Area” > “Masthead Image & Slideshow” > “Masthead display”
(Note: The “show/hide” options are only available if you are using the “slideshow of images” or “custom uploaded flash .swf file” option in that area.)

The options should be fairly self-explanatory, but just for an example, let’s say we wanted to only show our masthead slideshow on just our “static home page.”  To do this, you’d want to make the following selections in that area:

When you’re done, make sure to click the “Save Changes” button.

If you’d like more information on these options and how they work, see this tutorial here.

Individual Menu Items

Any individual menu item that you create within
“ProPhoto” > “Customize” > “Menus”
can be hidden on any particular page type you chose.  To do this, simply click on the little “gear” (edit) link for the menu item and in the pop-up that appears, click the “Advanced” tab and then check whichever page types you DON’T want the menu item to appear on.  Make sure to click “Save Changes” when you are done.

For example, let’s say we wanted to hide our “Home” menu link from appearing on our “static home page”:

Bio

To display your built-in ProPhoto “Bio” area on only certain pages, you’ll want to go to
“ProPhoto” > “Customize” > “Bio Area” > “General” > “Bio on page types”
In that area, you can specifically select which pages you want your Bio are to be displayed on.  Make sure to click “Save Changes” when you’re done.  Let’s say for example you only want your Bio area to be displayed on your “Static home page” and your “posts page.”  You would want to make the following selections:

For more information on these options, see this tutorial.

Call to Action

You can modify where your Call to Action buttons appear by going to
“ProPhoto” > “Customize” > “Content Appearance” > “Call to Action” > “‘Call to Action’ buttons”
Simply check the boxes of the places where you DO want the Call to Action buttons to appear, then click “Save Changes.”

Comments

ProPhoto doesn’t include the option to hide comments on certain pages or posts because this can actually be done using default WordPress functionality.  Click here for more info on how to do that.

Sidebar

To have your Fixed Sidebar only display on certain page types, you’ll want to go to
“ProPhoto” > “Customize” > “Sidebars & Footer” > “Sidebar” > “Sidebar Display”
Simply check the boxes of the page types where you DO want the Sidebar to be shown and click “Save Changes.”  For example, if we wanted our Sidebar only displayed on our “posts page” and on “individual post pages,” we would select the following:

wp38_sidebar display

(For information on hiding the Fixed Sidebar on individual posts or pages, see here.)

Footer Area

You can choose where your Footer Area is displayed by going to
“ProPhoto” > “Customize” > “Sidebars & Footer” > “Footer Area” > “Footer main content area”
Again, you’ll want check the boxes of the page types where you DO want the Footer to be displayed and click “Save Change.”  Let’s say we only wanted our Footer Area to show on our “static home page” and our “posts page”:

Other/More Specific

Couldn’t find an option to hide what you’re looking for?  Or perhaps you found what you were looking for but you want to be able to hide it more specifically?  If so, you can most likely accomplish what you’re wanting by using some Custom CSS code.  Click this link here to see our tutorial on how to do that.
