Installing ProPhoto designs

ATTN CURRENT WORDPRESS USERS: If you already have a WordPress site up and running, but want to switch to using ProPhoto or a different ProPhoto design, you can avoid problems or a site in “under construction” mode by following this proposed workflow.

How do I download the design zip file?

After purchasing a ProPhoto Add-On Design, a web page will provide a link to download the zip file. If you did not see that page, check the inbox (or spam folder) associated with Email address used to purchase the Design for the download link.

Installing a ProPhoto Design Template

  1. Start by downloading your .zip file to your computer. A link is provided in the confirmation Email from ProPhoto.
Store the zip file somewhere easily accessible for the next step, and keep it – you will need the instructions and Photoshop files in the future.
  2. Login into your WordPress site and click on “ProPhoto” > “Manage Designs” on the left.

Customizing your design

Before you do anything else, make sure you locate the instructions file the designer created for your specific design.  To find this you’ll ‘unzip’ the zip file you received that has this naming convention,  design_design-name_package.zip‘. Locate the pdf instructions file inside. Design_instructionsYou’ll save yourself a lot of time by looking here first.  Use these instructions, combined with our support site to personalize the design using the ProPhoto “Customize” area within WordPress. If you ever need to ‘start over’ with a Design, simply return to the “Manage Designs” area and create a new copy from the original template. See our guide on managing your designs in ProPhoto.
You may also find the necessary Photoshop and special instructions provided by the designer in the zip file you downloaded, so open the folder on your computer to access these files.

If Design Installation Fails

If you try uploading your ProPhoto design using the steps above and are unsuccessful, it is possible that your webhost’s server is having a hard time uploading the design because of the size of the zip file.  If this the case, you may be able to get the design uploaded by following the steps above again, but with three small modifications.

  1. After Step 1 above, once the design file has been downloaded to your computer, you’ll want to ‘unzip’ the zip file you received, ‘design_design-name_package.zip‘.
  2. After you unzip this file, review it’s contents and you’ll see several different items, including some instructions files, a folder of Photoshop files and another zip file, ‘design_design-name.zip‘.  Take this “inner” zip file and move it to your desktop.wp38_p4 upload design zip
  3. Now, when completing Step 4 above, upload the “inner” zip that you have placed on your desktop (‘design_design-name.zip‘), instead of  the ‘package’ zip.  Hopefully then you ‘ll be able to complete the remainder of the steps.

If this inner zip file is still too large for your server restrictions then the next option is to contact your host.  Ask them if they will increase the PHP settings for max upload size on your site to 30mb.  If they are able to do that, then you should be able to upload the inner zip file as explained above.

If your host cannot or is unwilling to increase your max upload size; or if they have and this modified version of the upload is still not working, then try uploading the files manually via FTP – for a guide, click here.

Working With Special Design Files

Any questions regarding special customizations beyond the typical ProPhoto interface settings will need to be directed to the designer. (e.g., “how do I change the text in the image?”, “how do I change the colors used in the images?”, “where do I change the link for my buttons?”) The contact info for the designer will be found in the instructions.txt file included in your “package” zip file originally downloaded after your purchase.

Once you have purchased your ProPhoto design, you should have been taken to a page where you could download a zip file. If you weren’t taken to that page, look in the inbox (or spam folder) for the Email address that you used to purchase the design. This Email will direct you back to the download page.

Video: ProPhoto Design Upload

The ‘design_{design-name}_package.zip’ file you have downloaded DOES NOT get uploaded directly into ProPhoto. Instead, you want to double-click on the ‘design_design-name_package.zip’ file on your computer to un-zip it. The file should be un-compressed as a folder that contains a ‘design-{design-name}.zip’ file, an ‘Instructions.txt’ file, a ‘license.txt’ file and possibly several other files. The ‘design_{design-name}.zip’ file is the one that gets uploaded to ProPhoto.

Open the ‘Instructions.txt’ file and read it as it will contain instructions for installing the design zip file. This file will also display instructions given by the designer on how to implement any additional images, graphic files, or plugins that may be included in the main folder, if they are required for that design. Any questions regarding these instructions will need to be directed to the designer.

For your convenience, general installation instructions are included below, but check your download’s Instructions.txt file for complete instructions….
